The Best Whale Watching Spots on the Gold Coast: A 2026 Guide
In my opinion, nothing turns an average day into a magical one faster than spotting a whale in its natural habitat. There is something extra special about glancing out to sea and spotting a whale breach, surface with its calf, or put on a show with a cheeky tail slap.
Each year, thousands of humpback whales make their journey from icy Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland to breed and give birth. On the East Coast, whale sightings are so common that a stretch of coastline has now been nicknamed ‘Humpback Highway’.
Whale watching season traditionally runs from June through to October, with peak sightings occurring between July and September.
Whether you're a local or visiting for a holiday, whale season is one of the most special times of year to experience the Gold Coast.
If you're hoping to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants during their annual migration, here are some of our favourite spots on the Gold Coast to keep watch.

The Best ‘Free’ Whale Watching Spots on the Gold Coast
One of the best things about whale season? You don't necessarily need a boat tour to see them.
As a local living on the southern end of the Gold Coast, one of the highlights of my day was spotting whales during my morning walks. The Tugun to Coolangatta stretch has a cruisey path along the beach, with plenty of places to stop for coffee and a quick refuel along the way.
Some other great land based viewing options are:
1. Snapper Rocks
Famous for its world-class surf break, Snapper Rocks can get rather crowded, but for a reason. Aside from catching a dream wave, many surfers have had the unforgettable experience of sharing the lineup with a whale. Even if you're not surfing, the elevated viewing areas around Snapper provide excellent vantage points.
2. Rainbow Bay SLSC
The views from Rainbow Bay SLSC are as iconic as the club itself, with tables on the balcony hot property during whale watching season. I’ve been lucky enough to spend a happy hour there and spot 4 different whales breaching and playing so close to shore - it was an unforgettable experience!
3. Point Danger
Located on the Queensland / New South Wales border, Point Danger offers panoramic ocean views and is widely regarded as one of the best whale watching lookouts on the coast.
There are public viewing binoculars available, making it easy to scan the ocean for migrating whales, dolphins, and other marine life.
4. Black Dingo Café
For those who prefer their whale watching with a side of coffee, Black Dingo Café offers stunning coastal views and an even better menu. A perfect spot for breakfast or lunch, you'll often know when the whales have arrived by the collective "oohs" and "ahhs" from the dining crowd.
5. SkyPoint Observation Deck (Q1)
For a completely different perspective, head to the SkyPoint Observation Deck on Level 77 of Q1 in Surfers Paradise.
The tallest tower on the Gold Coast, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the entire city as well as excellent vantage points of the coastline, with viewing telescopes available to help spot whale activity offshore.

Want a Front Row Seat?
For those who are wanting to head right where the action is, nothing quite compares to seeing these gentle giants up close from the water.
If whale watching is high on your Gold Coast bucket list, booking a tour gives you the best opportunity to witness humpback whales in their natural environment.
Our favourite companies to recommend to guests are:
